Strategy&Ops Consultancy is pleased to share a newly published research article developed
through collaboration between researchers at Griffith University and Strategy&Ops
Consultancy.
Published in the Australasian Journal of Environmental Management, the study examines waste management interventions implemented by five municipal councils in Fiji. It explores whether these initiatives were effectively designed to influence recycling, composting and other sustainable waste behaviours.
The research highlights several important opportunities for local governments and
environmental organisations:
- Move beyond one-way communication towards interactive and digital engagement
- Involve households, students, market vendors and other end-users in program design
- Apply behavioural science and social marketing principles
- Establish clear, measurable objectives and stronger evaluation processes
- Explore practical solutions such as community composting hubs and recycling vending machines
For Small Island Developing States, effective waste management requires more than infrastructure and information campaigns. Programs must reflect local needs, motivations and constraints while making sustainable behaviour easier to adopt and maintain.
The article was authored by Aarti Sewak, Sameer Deshpande and Sharyn Rundle-Thiele from Griffith University, together with Professor Fang Zhao from Strategy&Ops Consultancy.
