Course Overview:
This professionally designed short course series equips ecotourism practitioners with practical skills, knowledge, and tools to lead sustainable tourism initiatives. Through three progressive levels, participants learn to design, implement, and grow ecotourism enterprises grounded in conservation, community engagement, and ethical business practices.

Course Structure:

  • Module 1: Ecotourism Essential
    This module defines ecotourism, outlining its core pillars of conservation, community, education, and sustainability. Participants will learn to distinguish ecotourism from nature-based and sustainable tourism, understanding its unique focus and historical context.
  • Module 2: Industry Trends and Demands
    Explore the rise of the eco-conscious traveler and key market demands like nature immersion and authentic experiences. Understand the impact of generational shifts and technology, including the “work-cation” opportunity, to stay competitive.
  • Module 3: Standards and Certification
    Navigate the complex world of sustainability certifications like GSTC, Green Destinations, and The Long Run. Understand why standards matter for credibility, avoiding greenwashing, and gaining business benefits like market appeal and operational efficiency.
  • Module 4: Ethics and Equity
    Go beyond environmentalism to grasp the critical importance of Indigenous rights (FPIC, land rights), cultural sensitivity (avoiding commodification), and gender inclusion in responsible tourism. Learn best practices for ensuring fairness and respect.
  •  Module 5: Ethics and Equity
    Analyze real-world ecotourism successes like the Galápagos, Borneo, and Daintree using a framework covering context, operations, community integration, and outcomes. Extract key lessons on regulation, local benefits, and adaptive management.
